What is Stabilized?

Stabilized wood and Antler
I’ve been asked many times about what “stabilized” means. Usually this refers to wood, but in my case I have the same process done with antler. The process is intended for wood or antler that is porous and not much good for anything if it’s not done. In this process they submerge the wood or antler in a chamber filled with acrylic resin. A vacuum is pulled on the chamber removing all the air from the wood/antler. When the vacuum is removed air pressure is added to push the acrylic resin into the wood/antler. From here the wood/antler is put into an oven, and this hardens the resin in the wood/antler. All that is left is a much heavier and “stabilized” piece of wood or antler. Where all the air gaps were, it is now acrylic. I personally like the natural look and usually have mine done with clear acrylic.
The duck callers have used acrylic “toneboards” for years. If you go to a calling competition almost all use acrylic calls for the clear crisp sound, and the volume it provides. I thought I would give stabilizing my antler for my toneboards and was knocked out by the improvement stabilizing provides. I guarantee you’ll love ‘em too!
