The toneboard is the “voice” of the call… the barrel is the amplifier, similar to cupping your hands around your mouth when you talk or yell… the barrel gives a little more volume, and some direction. Being that the toneboard is the real sound maker I keep my toneboards exclusive to my calls. Each one hand crafted one at a time by me here in TN.
I thought folks might be interested in seeing how I make my toneboards. Each one is individually turned to dimension, drilled, finished, the ramp cut in, the air channel cut in, and finished, sanded, buffed and polished…. Easy for me to say huh? Lol Here’s a little pictorial of the process this one is on one of my higher end toneboards (Warthog tusk ivory). The process is the same on all the materials I use…by the way I only use natural materials… Antler, Buffalo horn, Ivory (warthog, and hippo ... legal) and Wood.
Here’s the Warthog tusk on the bandsaw… I'm trying to figure out how to make this thing straight!
I try to find the solid area that is big enough in diameter to make a toneboard (straight that is!) I take the solid piece and spin it round.
Next step… turn the end to diameter and put my o-ring grooves in! I'll have to do some "creative" cutting to miss the flat that was left during the turning.
Then I put on my CA finish while it's in the round.
The ramp is cut…
Then I cut the air channel (using an end mill)
After all this I put my CA finish on the ramp and in the air channel. I sand it all smooth buff and polish for a very high gloss… Needless to say this is a couple hour process. I do hope this has been interesting to you!
